A sword was one of the most favorite weapons with all metal using nations. It was not only a weapon but also a symbol of bravery, status and power. A sword was effective in offense and in defense. It was easy to carry and to care for. Swords may be divided into three categories: those for cutting only, those for thrusting only and those for both cutting and thrusting. The cutting sword is the oldest of the swords. With use, it was discovered that thrusting requires less energy and may be more effective to kill an enemy than cutting. As a result the sword evolved into a cutting and thrusting weapon. With time skill became more important than brute force and the sword evolved into a rapier and was used for thrusting only. Swords that are intended for cutting only are usually curved. Swords designed only for thrusting always feature a straight blade.
A sword consists of two parts: the blade and the hilt. The hilt of the sword consists of the tang and the blade proper. Usually the tang passes through the hilt entirely and is riveted at the outside of the pommel. The wooden handle is attached to the tang between the hilt and the pommel. The handle is then wrapped with leather or leather and wire.
