Arms and Armor History - 1st Century AD


Pugio - Pugio was a Roman dagger used by the Roman soldiers as a sidearm. Pugio featured a straight, leaf-shaped and double-edged blade perfect for stabbing. Julius Ceasar was stabbed with pugio by Marcus Brutus. Pugio originated from Spanish daggers in the early 1st Century AD. The size of the dagger ranged from 7 to 11 inches in length and about 2 inches in width. Pugio came with a wooden scabbard that was covered with iron plate. The front plate of the scabbard was usually highly decorated with other metals such as brass or silver or with red, green or yellow enamel.
