Arms and Armor History - 5th Century BC

Damascus Steel - Damascus steel (also known as Wootz steel) was a special and unique steel that was developed on the Indian subcontinent around 5th century BC and which later spread to the Middle East (Persia). This type of steel was characterized by its beautiful, wavy dark patterns and incredible hardness. This was achieved with a complex process of forging together very hard, but brittle iron carbide with regular softer iron. It is said that ores used to make Damascus steel contained metals such as tungsten and vanadium which contributed to the properties of the steel. Recent examination of the Damascus steel concluded that it also contained cementite nanowires and carbon nanotubes (known very hard structures) which resulted from the forging process.
